Lab Equipment

My students need scientific equipment including hoses, flasks, and clamps in order to carry out various experiments in Physics.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Alpert's classroom raised $445

My Students

Physics has the reputation of being all about math. As a teacher of Physics to high school freshmen, I stress hands on labs each week of school. While some of my materials are homemade many materials must be ordered from reputable science equipment companies.

My students attend a charter school.

The majority of my students come from single parent homes and receive free or reduced school lunches/ breakfasts. Most have little or no experience in the proper completion of scientific labs in a school setting.

My Project

I have selected a variety of materials that will enhance our lab experiences by providing ring stands with rings and clamps for the creation of two devices: A Galilean Thermometer which measures temperature by expanding and contracting air in an upside down volumetric flask. It is calibrated with a pipette which sucks up colored water. A wave machine which creates a wave that passes through a medium almost 3 mers long (ten feet). This device uses duct tape, sour patch candies and shish-kabob sticks and two ring stands with rings to support the tape. Both of these experiments were great successes last year and I hope to be able to repeat them this year with more student involvement.

Students learn best when they can create projects on their own.

These projects demonstrate the scientific principles that we are studying. Many of these projects are counter-intuitive in that they operate in ways that the students did not predict. This is important for the resolution of commonly held misconceptions about science.
