We are a medium size charter school with very little money for science "toys." It is exactly the hands-on experiences gained from seeing and using materials that is priceless. Using scientific equipment will also assist my students in "workplace readiness" by allowing to add scientific equipment as tools with which they are familiar. At the beginning of the year, I ask students to measure masses using the metric system. This system is totally alien to them even though bottled soda now comes in 1 liter bottles. I stress the fact that they must become more global in their outlook in order to be able to function as adults in a global economy. Meters, liters and grams play no role in their lives to date. We must change that outlook.
