Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are Honors and Advanced Placement students who are extremely hard-working and absolutely love science. They are curious about the impact of science on day to day life and using the concepts we have learned in the classroom to understand the impact we have on our environment.
When truly inspired by something, they tenaciously pursue knowledge related to it.
I have students who are very much natural born leaders. They amaze me every day with their enthusiasm for science and love of chemistry.
My Project
This year, my AP chemistry class is larger than it has been in several years and this equipment is needed to help accommodate the additional students working on STEM labs. We go through a lot of distilled water with nearly 300 students using our lab during the week. We need a new 25 L water carboy that will be designated for triple distilled water only for STEM experiments that require truly pure water for the most accurate results. The carboy cleaner will help me to clean the older carboys that we have as well as maintaining this new one for many years.
We desperately need an additional pH meter or I will have to prepare two different STEM labs for students to do simultaneously- one for half of my students to complete and another, using different equipment, for the other half of the students!
It would make it much more difficult on the students, who I encourage to work together to figure out their calculations, when half of them are not doing the same lab. It will also make instruction for both labs exceptionally cumbersome with only half of the students needing to pay attention to the first set of instructions and the rest waiting for their turn, and then repeating the process in reverse during the next lab period!
Nearly all of the labs that we do in our chemistry lab are STEM labs. The goal of STEM is to integrate science and mathematics using technology and engineering principles. My students have been given opportunities to do more STEM labs thanks to the amazing donors here at Donor's Choose.
