The cost of two copies each of Alphabet Adventure, Alphabet Mystery, and Elmo's ABC Book (from Barnes and Noble) is $100, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I am a teacher in the Bronx of a bilingual, Special Education class with 13 students. My students are between the ages of 10 and 13 and are classified as having mental retardation and/or autism. They function between a pre-K and kindergarten level. We spend a lot of time on phonemic awareness, phonics, and alphabet recognition. Recently, I brought in some ABC books from the library with which my students really connected. I renewed them until I was not able to do so anymore.
I would like to add these ABC books to our class library to have available to the students during center time or after they finish their work. I would appreciate help in adding two copies of each book in order to allow more opportunity to all the students to look at and revisit a book that they really enjoy.
The first book features Elmo from Sesame Street. My students love Sesame Street and Elmo, so they connected with this book. Often, I hear them looking at the book and singing, "La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la Elmo's World." I am happy to see a connection with a program they like and a text that they like. So, I would like to add this text to the library.
The other two books are alphabet books written by Audrey Woods. They are great because the characters in the story are the letters of the alphabet. In "Alphabet Adventure," little "i" loses his dot. The letters have to help him find it in time to go to school to help children learn their letters. My kids act this story out. They like it so much, they reenact it.
The other story is also by Audrey Woods. It is a sequel to "Alphabet Adventure" called "Alphabet Mystery." In this text, letter "x" is missing. The letters have to find him by working together. Again, it is a favorite and gets reenacted by my students.
I love the enthusiasm they have for these books. I also like that they are learning the letters at the same time they are connecting with literature.
Thanks for reading this grant proposal. I hope you will help add these books to our library. "La, la, la, la."
