Help me give my students a chance to try Kyotaku printing, or Japanese fish prints. These are traditionally done with a real fish to document a catch, but with your help we can make prints with plastic models.
My students come to art class excited to expand their horizons, learn about art, and to create. I strive to treat them as if they are accomplished artists, and their work reflects this attitude.
Our school has a unique teaching model focusing on life-long learning, with multi-age classrooms and adult mentors.
Students master each learning benchmark before moving to the next level. Our school is part of a high-performing network of schools in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. Our students come from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. We receive free breakfast and lunch and school-wide Title I services.
My Project
I love the technique Japanese fishermen have used to document their catch when they come back from fishing. I want my students to be able to do the same but with plastic fish. With the fish models, rice paper, and acrylic paints, they will make prints by rolling ink onto a fish and then pressing it onto rice paper.
I found plastic fish that represent the ones found in the Great Lakes.
This way we can combine this art project with a social studies and science lesson.
The fish are reusable which will enable me to do this project again for years to come.
