Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are growing up in a world that is constantly in motion and constantly advancing technologically. If they cannot keep up, they will be left behind. Unfortunately, the resources that are currently provided to my students do not allow for adequate exposure to on-line sources of information.
My students are 8th grade special education students in Hawaii.
They come from rich and diverse backgrounds, yet all share a strong connection to one another and their land. While they are all more than capable of navigating around Facebook and Instagram, they lack fundamental typing skills and the technological research skills that are so essential to their future success. Our school is a fairly large Middle school and we lack the resources to ensure that all students can have access to technology on a regular basis. My students in particular, need extra time and extra practice to truly become comfortable with the technology.
My Project
All 8th graders will work on a project called Kulia I Ka Nu'u (or Strive for the Summit). This is a year long project that culminates in a research paper and presentation at the end of the year. This year the 8th grade students will be tackling a social or environmental issue and creating a solution to the problem. While they will be presenting the project in groups, each student will be responsible for their individual research component. The chrome books would go a long way in allowing my students adequate time and exposure to on-line sources of information. They would also give my students the added benefit of working at their own individual pace and not being rushed through their research.
Kulia I Ka Nu'u is an opportunity for my students to show me ( and themselves) how much they have grown and learned throughout the year.
It holds the students accountable for their individual learning and still allows them to collaborate with one another. By providing my students with this technology, they will have the opportunity to take learning into their own hands and hopefully be better prepared for the demands of this technological world.
