My Students
Kulia i ka Nu'u: Strive for the Highest. That is the motto of class. Just how far my students will reach will be determined by overcoming the technology deficiencies we face in school.
Kulia i ka Nu'u!
Strive for the highest. That is the motto my freshmen in US history class learn by. The goal of this class is to help students become productive members of society. And with 130 heterogeneously grouped students who have both the passion and the desire to reach for the highest this goal is achievable. But the passion of my students are not matched by the availability of the technology in our school. 1,100 students share two computer labs that have a total of 60 computers for student use. As a public school located in a working class community, funding for technology upgrades are not easily found. 20% of our student population are military students.
My Project
My 130 freshmen student belong to Generation Y. It is no secret that if my students want to be productive members of society they need the technological skills required in our day to day lives. With the lack of available technology these students are now at a disadvantage. Schools are the primary social and technological agent in students lives. They are in school 30 plus hours a week. If you walked into my class you would see learning accomplished on white boards and through paper and pencil means. When the best technology you have in the classroom is a 1997 JVC television you worry about how prepared these students will be for post high endeavors. Even one notebook will affect change and bring my students closer to the being technologically capable.
There is no single most important resource that my classroom needs more than computers.
Pads are cheaper and provide adequate access to both MS office and Internet search capabilities. These are building block skills that lead to better prepared youth entering the work force and college.
