My Students
I work in a public, nationally certified STEM elementary school in 5th grade. I share 3 classes of kids that are amazing wonderers! Many of the kids have been with each other since they began their school careers and have formed great bonds with each other.
I want to have diverse characters represented through the books available in my classroom library and used for read alouds in my lessons.
Our campus values facilitating the kids' growth in being Persistent, Solution Focused, Service Minded, and Adaptable. There are so many lessons like this that can be learned from characters that look like all of my students, not just some.
As 5th graders, we really work on building the skills to be successful in their middle school classes, but I want to start building their success as kind and accepting adults, too.
My Project
I am listening and learning every day as humans around me need help and recognition to get equality. I have realized that many diverse students are only provided with school material that doesn't honor their differences. I have used several book lists to come up with chapter and picture books that will build diverse representation in my classroom library. If this project gets funded, my diverse learners can adventure in books with diverse characters just like them.
All students will be exposed to the history of diverse characters and build empathy for all people.
