Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our campus is a Title I school which serves students with economic disadvantages. Approximately 67% of our school's population receive free and reduced lunches. A majority of our student population consists of Hispanic and Caucasian students. Despite the challenges, each student comes in every day eager to learn.
Even after Hurricane Harvey, our students continue to overcome academic challenges on a daily basis.
My goal in my classroom is for learning to be a daily adventure where every student can explore new books and ideas with curiosity and excitement. To create an exciting learning environment, my students need various creative classroom tools and learning opportunities.
Each year, I strive to help my students develop their love of reading and show them how reading takes them on adventures anywhere in the world. Then the students learn how to make connections with reading in other subjects. This type of learning environment helps all students grow as learners and explore topics of interest.
My Project
By providing students access to news publications in the classroom, they can be in the know of current events and research in various content areas. The children's news publications are created specifically for the grade level to meet the learning and developmental needs of the students.
News publications in print and online will expose the students to various writing styles and allow the students to make cross-curricular connections.
The articles will help the students build background knowledge, improve problem-solving skills, and utilize their listening and speaking skills to discuss numerous topics. The publications also offer an online component which a multitude of extensions.
