This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located a few miles from the California-Mexico border with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. We are a class of first and second-grade students who are anxious and happy to learn. With the curriculum becoming more rigorous, especially in reading and math, we want to be able to experience the learning firsthand and be focused. Our class is an active bunch of students who are highly engaged and ready to dive into learning.
My Project
These materials will be quite a hit in our classroom as our students are learning addition and subtraction. Money is a great real-world concept that is relatable to all students. These kits would be such a fun way to introduce how money in terms of grocery shopping, something all of my students are familiar with. Learning through play has been a big theme in our classroom this year to create engagement and be hands-on. The students will love taking turns playing customer and cashier and get to practice their social skills as well. We hope to have these kits be a fun screen-free center the students get to enjoy all the time!
