Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are smart, creative, interesting and worth as many opportunities as I can make for them with your help. I teach art to all the students at our elementary school. Our school has an extremely high population of special education students, English as a second language and low income families. I want to make sure that my students keep engaged in learning by having access to the best resources I can provide. I would like for my students to have a classroom library full of art books. These books would be for a variety of activities such as learning to draw or to read about different artists. This is a terrific opportunity to learn together and independently in the art room with different resources than are currently available. Little by little I would like to gain enough books so that students could teach the class about different techniques or artists they have researched. I would like to do lessons where each child reads about a different artist and then tries to create their own picture in the style of that artist. This is an introduction to doing a research project at the elementary level. The books I have researched and chosen are age appropriate and could be enjoyed independently by 3-5th grade and in teacher directed lessons for grades K-2. Our budget for art is extremely small, and we just simply cannot afford books. The entire budget is spent on consumable materials and is long gone before we can even think about acquiring books. I would like to build my library in stages as to provide students with more and more books as the years go on. Also, this would be a more affordable option since an entire library would cost hundreds of dollars. We have completed “Phase One” in building our library and would like to add these additional titles in “Phase Two”. With your help, together we can give these kids the credit they deserve for the fabulous work they do in school. We can help them be excited and proud of what they learn and create!
