Knock Out the Noise for Learners Living Here in Allentown!
Help me give my students noise blocking headphones. Several students are "attending" virtual school from hotel rooms and shelters. The headphones would help them stay focused in their environment when it is less than conducive for optimal learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
700 children, with ages ranging from 1st to 5th grade belong to our school family. It is a diverse community facing significant challenges. One of the greatest ones is that over 95% of our students live in poverty stricken environments.
As the students have transitioned to virtual learning, it has been an extreme challenge.
In many places students call home, they do not have optimal work space. Several of the families have lost a place to live and are living in shelters and hotel rooms. Imagine having several children in your family trying to attend to virtual school when the surroundings are hectic and noisy. It is almost impossible, so we are trying to support the students to give them tools they need to find success.
In the midst of the hardships for Allentown’s elementary aged children, I hope that you will consider becoming a part of our school efforts. I believe that strong partnerships with our families and the surrounding community are integral for student success. Your generosity and kindness is greatly appreciated.
My Project
My school district is 100% virtual until at least the beginning of February.
Each day the students are logged onto the computer for six hours to learn their reading, math science, and social studies.
They participate in Zoom sessions for large and small instruction, Lexia for reading support, Dreambox for math, and Accelerate for ELA, math, science and social studies. All of these platforms rely on the students to be able to hear through the computer. Without these noise blocking headphones, it is almost impossible for the learners to learn in some of their hectic environments. Please help them get this tool so they are set to go to great places.
