Help me give my students knitting bags, as well as yarn and knitting needles appropriate to their skill levels, so we can continue our enrichment knitting club.
I teach all the high school English classes in a tiny PreK-12 public school, which means I get to keep my kids for four years. We currently have about 80 high school students. A major advantage of teaching in such a small school is that we get to know our students, and their individual needs, very well.
I love the flexibility our school has built into the schedule to address our kids' individual needs and interests.
We use the last hour of the day to provide intervention and enrichment. As a result, I have done everything from teaching intervention math to middle school students to providing a board game enrichment room for a mixed group of students in grades 6-12. We're always looking for further enrichment opportunities to expand our kids' interests and skills.
My Project
Last school year, I decided to learn to knit. My students were intrigued by this new hobby, so I started a knitting club for beginners during our school's enrichment period. To my surprise, 55 of our 62 students in grades 10-12 signed up for the class, and the majority stuck with it and are now proficient knitters to varying degrees.
We now need some additional materials so I can challenge my more experienced group while also getting our incoming freshmen and sophomores started with beginner supplies.
Most of last year's knitters have indicated a desire to continue learning new skills, and many of the younger students want to begin as well. I have so many interested students that I can run multiple sections of knitting classes, both for beginners and for more advanced students, during our school's enrichment period.
This hour at the end of the day is used to offer students extra help in academic areas as well as to provide enrichment opportunities in areas of interest. Knitting is an engaging activity that enables kids to make something concrete of which they can be proud. The kids and I are so excited to advance our skills!
