K'Nex to Build Connections to Life!

My students need K'NEX for the chance to work with their hands to develop an understanding of how energy makes things work! The need to collaborate and build will deepen their thinking as well as their understanding!

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in a rural, fairly low income community. We have just over 300 students, pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. The high rate of poverty, in our community, means that our students have limited opportunities. This also means that we have limited funds to provide them with opportunities!

My fourth grade students are highly active, hands-on learners.

The learning of the past, is ineffective with them. They struggle to maintain focus when seated for extended lengths of time. They struggle to maintain focus when not kept moving. I would love to provide opportunities for my students to be more engaged and hands-on in the classroom.

My Project

Twenty years ago, I was given the opportunity to work with battery-operated legos, each week, in my fourth grade classroom. This is a memory that is engrained. The projects took not only critical thinking skills and fine motor skills but also forced me to develop social skills which would allow me to be successful in a group setting. These are all vital skills that must be developed in our young students!

The chance to purposefully work with K'Nex will give my students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the way in which the world around us works!

Science and engineering are areas which are nearly ignored in the elementary school setting. I would like to work on turning this around. I hope to encourage students to develop an interest in science and engineering!
