Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves one of Houston's most under served and economically disadvantaged communities. The obstacles our students face on a daily basis are often situations that any adult would succumb to. And despite this, our students come to school every day, ready to embody the courage, perseverance, and honor that our school stands for.
Thankfully, we've found an amazing venue to build relationships with our kids: the soccer field.
A large majority of our kids love to relax and unwind on the field. And as a program, we've been blessed to be able to use our love of the game to catapult these students to higher education, making many first-generation college students.
Unfortunately, our athletic budget doesn't meet the level of talent and passion of our soccer players. We lack the training equipment that a proper soccer program deserves. The equipment we do have is in poor condition. Our kids make the best of what they have, but for hard-working, potential college athletes, we owe it to them to give them the best preparation.
My Project
As of now, our lack of a gym to workout in has made our strength and conditioning training depend on the weather outside. Hurricane Harvey, as well as Houston's unpredictable weather, has proven that we can no longer depend on our field as a means for improving cardiovascular endurance. This project will change that and give us more flexibility on how we practice strength and conditioning.
The AirBike and the Rower are excellent tools to push our athlete's aerobic capacities, while also introducing them to new ways of training their bodies.
Our soccer players have missed out on weeks-worth of practices due to the hurricane and inclement weather, so them having these tools inside will be able to simulate them running up and down the soccer field. We also plan on using the gym mat to have a comfortable surface to perform sit-ups, jump lunges, and even pulling and pushing sleds.
While our program is still small, with the amazing contributions of this community, we are slowly becoming a program that our athletes deserve.
