Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students worry about coming to school and staying safe; and yet, they still come to school to explore, learn and grow.
I am working to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science, and social studies.
My Project
Who knew that kids would need so much Kleenex tissue? A kindergarten teacher does.
Kleenex and Lysol will keep my students healthy throughout the school year and dry-erase markers are always needed for writing in our classroom.
When I started at my new school, I asked for Kleenex boxes to put around the room. I got a strange look... and a box of facial tissues. That one box of tissue did not last long. In a kindergarten classroom, little ones are constantly touching their noses. Kleenex is a must-have item all around the room.
Lysol will help me to sanitize the room and the materials that my students touch often as a community. The routine is: Spray. Wait ten minutes. Flip and spray again. Wait another ten minutes. Then, switch or put away the materials. We need to keep our materials germ-free.
Additionally, we write on white boards and writing boards constantly. This white board is mobile and will move around the room as needed. White boards are "non-threatening" for children. My students take chances to write letters and spell words. They can easily erase a mistake. I love to provide that opportunity for my students. But, like all markers, dry-erase markers dry out. We need an ample supply to help my students continue to take risks and learn to spell, draw, add and subtract. These markers are fun colors which make the kids want to write more. Thank you for helping me keep my students safe and keep them writing.
