I saw a video about this at professional development called, "I am me" and this statement sums up my students perfectly. My students have multiple impairments including, but most certainly not limited to; intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders, autism, and Down Syndrome. Some of my students use wheelchairs, some have feeding tubes, some are almost completely blind and some are non-verbal.
Many people would consider my students to be 'different' and you know what - I agree, in the most amazing way!
They are different because they never give up! They never stop trying! They never let you down!
My Project
The students in my classroom have a lot stacked them against due to various different disabilities including Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, Autism, and a number of other physical, mental, and cognitive impairments. Life in their shoes is oftentimes full of obstacles and challenges that most of us can never imagine.
Cooking, which is something many of us take for granted, is not an easy task for my students and it is my job to help them learn the skills necessary become as independent as possible.
This is why this project is SO very important! Recently I had a project funded that helped us get the big items we needed for our starter kitchen, and now I just need to fill in the missing pieces. I'm talking about mixing bowls, cake pans, measuring cups and spoons, spatulas, eating utensils, storage containers, you name it! Just a bunch of items that you and I are used to seeing on a regular basis, but these students may have never used before.
