This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun.

My students are diversity personified: from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

When I greet them each day, some are ready to be challenged and others are ready to be challenging. In middle school, you never know what the day might hold. One thing is for certain: most days are extremely busy and completely unpredictable!

My Project

My students have a blast whenever we're in the kitchen, even when their recipes don't go quite as planned. They learn just as much from their mistakes as they do from their successes and learn lifelong skills while they're doing it. We recently received four amazing stainless steel prep tables from our wonderful supporters at DonorsChoose.org, which have greatly expanded our working counter space.

Now that we have more elbow room, however, we need a few more items to make these prep tables truly useful in our upcoming Food Truck Frenzy financial literacy challenge: stocking each with additional cutting boards and can openers would give us the opportunity to keep our equipment separate and organized, without having to shuffle it back and forth between the kitchens and prep areas.

It's already a struggle keeping our equipment organized and in the proper locations because of multiple classes sharing the same space.

All my students love dessert and, while our dessert unit is at the end of the school year, they look forward to making cookies and cakes all year. I would love to add these two ice cream makers so they can see how easy it is to make homemade ice cream that has no additives, preservatives, or

When we have a fully equipped kitchen, students will be planning menus, budgeting, shopping, and executing recipes with their team. Teams will then compete to sell their food items, tracking their expenses and profits. The team with the most successful business will win the Food Truck Frenzy challenge, but all the students will gain valuable financial literacy skills. Thanks for considering our project!
