My Students
Have you ever considered the science seen every day? My students hadn't! Science was a foreign concept in a book that only nerds understood. That changed when a scientist came and showed science around them. Science made sense and the energy he created was magnetic. I want that energy in our class.
My students are predominately African-American students from small towns in the delta regions of Arkansas.
We are 100% free and reduced lunch public elementary located in a high poverty area with few jobs and limited resources. Many of my students come from households where education ended at high school, if it went that far. For many of my children, the only exposure they get to the world beyond their town is that which we provide. Were it not for us, many of them would never have attended the ballet or a museum or even a restaurant. Beyond the obstacles to education, they must overcome at home. They are faced with increasingly difficult educational expectations. Standards and requirements are changing and they must work diligently to meet them. This won't be done by keeping things the same. We have to change the game and enrich the educational experience so that more students can be reached and continue to move towards their personal best.
My Project
Through the materials listed in this grant, I hope to continue the passion towards science that was ignited with our guest speaker. These resources will provide my students with the opportunity for them to touch and create models of the solar system and simple machines. It will allow them to interact with science through games and fun and imaginative experiments.
I won't pretend that I am the only teacher with students who deserve your funding, I'm not that naive.
But, I assure you that by funding this project, you will be helping students who may not otherwise have this opportunity. Beyond that, you are helping students who truly understand and appreciate the importance of people like you who invest in their lives. By funding this project, you could be awakening the next generations greatest doctor, researcher, or engineer.
