My students are predominately African-American students from small towns in the delta regions of Arkansas. We are 100% free and reduced lunch public elementary located in a high poverty area with few jobs and limited resources. Many of my students come from households where education ended at high school, if it went that far. For many of my children, the only exposure they get to the world beyond their town is that which we provide. Were it not for us, many of them would never have attended the ballet or a museum or even a restaurant. Beyond the obstacles to education, they must overcome at home. They are faced with increasingly difficult educational expectations. Standards and requirements are changing and they must work diligently to meet them. This won't be done by keeping things the same. We have to change the game and enrich the educational experience so that more students can be reached and continue to move towards their personal best.
