This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can we close the opportunity gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? Our school is over 95% African-American and Latino, and 25% have special needs. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, and autism spectrum disorder. Our community in South Los Angeles has been historically oppressed and marred by violence. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population and families. In spite of all of their challenges, I am proud to work at an incredible school where the faculty and staff give 100% everyday for students. Our students are incredibly resilient and excited about learning - they just need your additional support!

My Project

My students need plastic pocket folders and composition notebooks in order to create a year-long portfolio and start our interactive reading notebooks. Interactive notebooks help students become more literate through hands-on activities. With interactive notebooks one side of the page is for teachers notes and examples of the skill being taught. The other side of the page is where the student displays their understanding of the concept via models, statements and diagrams. Students use critical thinking skills to organize and process information. The pocket folders are a great place to hold their writing throughout the year. Students will use these folders to revise each other's writing, show off their writing to their parents during conferences, and reflect on their growth each quarter.

So many of my students come in feeling defeated because they can't even acquire the basic supplies one would need to start out on the road to success; my goal is to change that.

Help us with these supplies so we can put together materials that the students will use as their "go to" resource everyday!
