Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The sixth grade history curriculum includes the study of \"Ancient Civilizations,\" ranging from Ancient Mesopotamia to Egypt to India to Rome. All students, including those with learning disabilities and other exceptionalities, should have access to this curriculum that is so foundational for understanding culture and diversity--in history and today. As a special education teacher of all subjects, I want to make sure that my students have every opportunity to experience education along with their general education peers. Additionally, I teach at a middle school in Watts. Many of the students and their families do not have the resources to fund trips across the city to museums, landmarks, or even the beach. Currently, in Los Angeles, there is a unique and waning opportunity to see the incredible findings of the King Tut tomb. All students--regardless of disability or socio-economic status--should be able to benefit from such an historic exhibit, and I would like to take my 10 students to see this exhibit before it closes on November 1. I am convinced that the lessons on ancient Egypt will be infinitely more valuable for my visual and kinesthetic learners when they have this experience with which to attach their knowledge. Thank you so much for considering the sponsorship of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these students!
