My Students
My students’ worlds have been turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I teach in a low-income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, and 85% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast, their daily source of nutrition. The school services many students who live in transient shelters. Eighteen percent of our students have special needs and receive special services.
Our class is comprised of general and special education students.
The students are African American, Haitian, Latino, and Arabic.
My students are learning fully remotely; this is their first school experience and I am trying to enhance distance learning to meet the needs of my students and their families.
Many of the parents are overwhelmed while trying to keep their children safe. They are stressing and they do not understand that we learn through play. I am working daily to help my students and their parents.
My Project
As we move toward the end of the year, I hope to leave the students with a love of learning. Soon they will be starting kindergarten, such a big milestone. I would love to place in every child's hand the story: King of Kindergarten. The book tells about a confident little boy while taking pride in his first day of kindergarten. He meets his teacher and finds his own seat while getting to know new friends. My current Pre K students have been remote all year long.
It will be a transition to go into school in person in the fall; I believe that literature is the key to help with the transition.
This story is written by a male African American author. The protagonist is an African American boy, mirroring the students in my remote class. Literature is a great way to help with Social Emotional transitions.
The project includes sidewalk chalk, too. Just a bit of fun to enhance the transition.
