I am a special education teacher who specializes in transition. My job is designed to assist students with disabilities with major life transitions (from middle to high school, from high school to post secondary life). My students have a wide variety of disabilities and varying levels of functioning but all are deserving and in need of quality transition services. They are energetic, active, and willing to learn.
My students face numerous challenges in their lives including hunger, safety, and unstable living situations.

My Project
My students are creative, energetic, and willing to learn. This project will help students begin to develop their transition skills. They'll learn important skills like time management, how to work as a team, and how to be safe in a work setting.
Our plan is to open up a cafe that is accessible to staff and students during predetermined times throughout the school day.
They will learn how to take orders and fill them which translates to developing skills in customer service and satisfaction. They will also learn to work with new equipment and manage cafe expectations, while maintaining academic and behavior expectations in the class. They will gain practice with maintaining a pleasant and clean work environment. Most importantly, they will learn skills related to academic areas such as reading and following directions, writing letters of appreciation to customers, creating digital content to highlight the Cafe, and of course counting and managing money.
