This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a middle school special education teacher in Queens, NY. Though each of my 12 students is sharp-witted and dynamic, they all are struggling readers and as yet unfamiliar with the wonder and beauty that a good book can offer.
As their teacher, I would like more than anything to help them experience reading as a wonderful and engaging activity. To help foster this experience I am asking for funding to purchase twelve copies of Ho Che Anderson's renowned graphic novel, "King: A Comics Biography of Martin Luther King, Jr."
The "King" novel has been praised for its vivid recreation of one of the most tumultuous periods in U.S. history and for its accuracy in depicting the personal and public lives of Dr. King, from his birth to his assassination. The visual approach combines the use of photographs, realistic portraiture and experssionistic imagery and alternates the graphic vividness of black and white images with ones in painterly full color. The dialogue is accurately naturalistic and the novel clearly depicts the moral, political and practical complexities that King was navigating.
A class set of 12 novels falls outside my school's budget for the year. However, I am certain that this book would be a wonderful way of turning my students on to reading, as well as exposing them to the rich history of the Civil Rights Movement. I believe that the novel's potential value to my students' education would be immeasurable.
Thank you!
