Kinetic Sand to Create Our Own Most Satisfying Videos

My Students

Our school houses approximately three hundred students in grades six through eight. My kids come from suburban neighborhoods, rural farms and public housing. My kids come from a small geographic region, but they have a vast array of life experiences.

My students are full of life, curious about the world and amazingly kind.

Our school's motto is that "we're a family," and my kids live out those words everyday. They care for their peers and look out for one another. My kids are a joy to be around. I love being in the classroom with them and looking for new ways to explore their interests and their creativity.

My Project

I am teaching a new meditation class, and my students have discovered that they really enjoy watching YouTube videos involving kinetic sand. People mold, cut and squish the sand. There is no narration, just the natural sounds from the activities. These videos are part of a trend called "most satisfying" or "oddly satisfying" videos. A recent Discovery magazine article stated that these videos are being studied by psychologists to determine why people respond to them. One researcher said that watching the videos "scratches an itch you didn’t know you had."

My students are going to combine their meditation skills with their tech skills to create, edit, and present their own most satisfying sand videos.

They will work in small groups to choreograph a series of sand shaping, cutting, and squishing. They'll video the sequences using iPads and then edit the sequences into one most satisfying video of their own.
