Help me give my students a variety of board games and LEGO sets to use during our Friday Free Time, so they can practice taking turns and sharing limited resources.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Hi, I'm a lower Elementary, Montessori-trained teacher within a public school. My students are curious, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. Many of them come from low income homes, but this doesn't stop them from coming to school with smiles on their faces. I am proud to be a part of an urban school district that offers Montessori education as an option to all families. It is amazing to see how my students can progress academically through this hands-on approach to learning.
My Project
On Friday afternoons, after a week of academic lessons and practice, my students are given a window of time to enjoy what we call Friday Free Time. During this time, students are encouraged to play in small groups. The activities offered are fun and highlight play while providing my students with opportunities to practice important social skills like sharing, collaboration, taking turns, and providing instructions to peers.
Two of the most popular activities during Friday Free Time are playing board games and building with LEGOs.
Board games provide opportunities to practice: critical thinking and logic; taking turns; being supportive of other players; and being a good winner or a good loser. While playing with LEGOs, my students: design collaboratively; help each other find pieces for their creations; problem solve design challenges based on the pieces available; and learn about each other through discussions about what they are building.
This project includes a variety of board games and some basic LEGO sets that will bring new life to our Friday Free Time activities. Thanks in advance for your help!
