My students need a rug for our morning gathering area, balance balls, and character education books to help build self-esteem and community within our classroom.
For the past eight years I've had the privilege of teaching students from very diverse backgrounds. Most of my students come from immigrant families and speak a variety of languages such as Haitian Creole, Spanish and several Guatemalan dialects. My school has one of the highest percentages of English Language Learners in Palm Beach County and 99% of our students receive free and reduced lunch.
Despite the many challenges my students face in and out of the classroom, they come to school every day with a smile on their face eager and excited to learn.
My goal as their first grade teacher is to provide them with a comfortable space where they feel a sense of security, belonging and a love for learning.
My Project
Every year, I try to create an environment where my students feel safe and a sense of belonging. The materials I'm requesting, like the rug, will be placed in our morning gathering area. We'll gather here every morning to greet each other, talk, and encourage each other to be the best we can be. The books I'm requesting will be used for Read Alouds that encourage friendship, kindness, caring and community.

I've also requested stability balls to continue the use of flexible seating in first grade. My project that was fully funded in June 2017, "Kinders Can Choose!," made flexible seating possible. These new stability balls will replace the previous ones.
