Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The goal for this project is for students to be encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and connect them to the themes in the book - Enemy Pie, which is a heartwarming children’s story about friendship, understanding, and overcoming prejudices.

I will assess their understanding by seeing how they express themselves about the themes in the book such as bullying, fitting in, diversity, and how to be kind.

Storage bins will be used to store books and enemy pie ingredients.

After learning about the need to practice kindness in the classroom, and in the real world, students will be able to perform random acts of kindness especially to those in need. Each student will create enemy pie bags to spread kindness to other students with the goodies being requested. With this project, my students will be able read books and then work together showing kindness and creating summaries to show unity and kindness. This project will help bring awareness about kindness to our school community. Students will be able to create kindness bracelets with beads and hand out with pie bags.

In order to measure the success of the project, students will participate in a post-project activity where they will show their understanding of compassion by completing a self-assessment. They will explain what and how they learned and how they will continue to show compassion in the future. They will use the TPT activities to create slides explaining their understanding. I will measure my students' success in learning about compassion by having them create videos that incorporate the following: define compassion and related words such as empathy, provide examples of compassion from literature and real life where compassionate acts helped to alleviate the suffering of others.
