Help me give my students items that will create an atmosphere of kindness and empathy in the classroom. Kindness rocks and books about these virtues will help instill these characteristics in my students!
Being a teacher of over 130 students I strive to encourage kindness and empathy in the classroom throughout the year. I want to create a culture of understanding differences of ethnicity, cultures, and emotional happiness. Being kind to each other and showing empathy will create a better school environment. The books that are requested will be incorporated into ELA lessons. Center work is an integral part of my class. My reading corner during centers will provide a calm, safe place to read and reflect on the kindness, empathy, and feelings books on the list. Students will act out different real world situations that occur in our society and have discussions on how they can understand the other person's view. Students will then write on how they can spread compassion throughout the community. The Building Empathy Grab and Play game will invite students to share and explain how they would handle everyday situations. Students will understand the perspective of and empathizing with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures. At the end of our Kindness and Compassion Unit, to end the year, the students will create kindness rocks. Students will also write a paragraph or essay on how to be kind, empathetic and compassionate. How can they take what they learned in the classroom out into the community or their home? Creating kindness rocks and giving them to other students in the classroom will give the kiddos a sense of understanding that being kind, empathizing with others, and being respectful of other's beliefs is what the ultimate goal is! I also plan on having students from different ethnic background talk about their culture and beliefs. Kindness and empathy are contagious so let's encourage it in and out of the classroom!
