My Students

When was the last time you read something because you choose to? The exciting technology of Amazon's Kindle eBook reader can be leveraged for students who need a gentle push toward discovering the joys of reading for pleasure.

Our 6th-12th grade school is a neighborhood school located in a primarily Dominican area of New York.

My students are founding students who have been at the school since its opening. Many of my students are highly involved in the school. Often they stay late at school to participate in study seminars, drama club, individual tutoring, or peer homework help. My eleventh grade English students are eager to improve their writing skills. They are preparing for the SATs in the spring and know that they have a fair amount of ground to cover in order to compete with students at a national level. One of the best ways to improve writing skills is to engage in frequent independent reading. Though my students are keenly aware of this, they often lack the resources to make it a reality.

My Project

With Amazon's Kindle eBook readers, I will be able to schedule a fair rotation for students to have instant access to the books they are most interested in. Students will participate in mandatory training session on how best to use the Kindles and associated resources such as the New York Public Library's E-Loan program and Goodreads.com, a site to find and share great books. Perhaps most importantly, access to a Kindle provides an initial incentive but will lead students to consider themselves as lifelong readers- not because someone tells them to read, because they choose to read. This shift in perspective is invaluable. The Kindle's size and ease of use will encourage students to maximize their opportunities to read. Many of my students spend a good deal of time commuting to school, waiting for younger siblings after school, or electing to use their lunch period for study hall. With Kindles, they could use this time to develop their literacy skills.

I cannot think of a better use of innovative technology like the Kindle than to use it as a tool to ignite a lifelong love of reading.

My students are hungry for opportunities and resources. They are ready to embrace challenges. With your help, my students will have access to literature they can choose to read for enjoyment.
