This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a variety of topics and students, but one group that I hold dear is my English Language Learners. In this class, students learn (academic) English and work on assignments from other classes. These students are from 5 different countries representing 4 different languages. They are hard-working, funny, and doing the best they can to learn and speak a new language.
I enjoy working with EL students because they show perseverance while navigating a completely new environment.
Due to their limited language ability, I want to provide them with all the resources they can get.
My Project
While word-to-word dictionaries are helpful, it can be difficult for newcomers to adequately use them due to limited language ability. By having access to kindles, students can quickly translate words to and from their native language and English through online translation applications. This encourages active participation in class, which is always crucial for EL students because it allows them to be a part of the learning environment. These kindles will also be available to students from my other classes to utilize online resources and use technology to further their educational goals. I am excited about this project and hope you will help me get my EL and other students these appropriate resources.
