Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the EL coordinator at a project based high school in San Diego. Our school's focus on project-based learning means that students learn academic content by engaging in authentic and meaningful challenges that solve real-world problems in their school and community. My role is to make sure education is accessible to all students, particularly those who are emergent bilinguals. Over a quarter of our students are bilingual, with varying levels of proficiency in English and other languages.
My goal is to engage and empower our bilingual students so that every single one of them can learn, grow, and connect.
This means working with individual students on gaps in their English proficiency, working with staff to make content more accessible to all students, and working with families to make sure all families can be engaged and empowered.
My Project
Bilingualism is a superpower, especially in our border community! I want to support my students' proficiency in English while valuing, supporting, and developing their bilingualism. Particularly at the high school level, some bilingual students struggle with reading grade level texts. Some have access to reading supports because of classification as English Language Learners or with specific disabilities, but there are others who encounter texts that are hard to access, despite not have an official classification. In addition, there are students who just haven't had the chance to develop a love of independent reading.
It's hard to find the perfect match between books that are interesting and engaging and which are also right for a student's level.
Digital tools like ebooks and audiobooks allow for a more diverse selection and allow all students to access books that support their literacy in both English and their native language. For classes with grade level texts that may be above a specific student's independent reading level, a kindle has built in tools that allow them to quickly look up words and save flashcards of unfamiliar terms. Students who can speak and understand another language (perhaps from speaking it at home) but who have only received academic instruction in English can read books in their native language with the same structured support. Best of all, studies in literacy have shown that skills transfer across languages - for example, a student who has access to books in his native Spanish will gain skills that also transfer to his reading (and writing!) in English. Making reading accessible, comfortable, and enjoyable will increase the amount of books that my students will read and connect with - so they can really flex their bilingual superpowers!
