My students need an electronic learning opportunity with a Kindle Fire.
Imagine being five years old and manipulating a Kindle Fire to learn to read and solve math problems. Kindergarten students love to work with technology to learn new skills. They never tire of the exciting and active new world introduced to them.
My students live in impoverished situations near the Navajo reservation in New Mexico.
Most of my students' families struggle to put food on the table and getting electronic devices is just not possible. My kindergarten students typically come to class at the beginning of the year academically behind their peers in other areas of the state. Their opportunities for learning prior to kindergarten are limited. Often their parents work multiple low paying jobs and have little time to devote to their pre-kindergarten learning. I work tirelessly to bring them strategies for reading and math to help them become competitive in the future. I am constantly on the lookout for teaching methods that will allow my students the greatest number of exposures to quality learning opportunities.
The Kindle Fire is a device that I can use to model correct strategies for reading and math and the children can continue to use independently to practice those skills correctly. I anticipate the students working in pairs to enthusiastically continue their learning with the necessary repetition to make the reading skills automatic. As a teacher with twenty students my ability to reach every student at the level they need is limited. By adding a device such as the Kindle Fire, students are able to have another opportunity to have corrective practice that reassures when they work correctly and reteaches when they make mistakes. Perfect practice makes perfect.
Ultimately, students that learn to read and solve math problems will feel more successful in school.
When students are able to work at grade level or higher, their confidence leads them to success in many facets of their lives. This tool will give them experience in reading and math as well as modern technology so they catch up and keep up with their peers.
