My students need these write and wipe boards (white boards) and the pens to encourage correct letter formation and to begin spelling and writing independently.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten is very different now compared to when we were kids! My students need to be able the alphabet legibly and begin using their knowledge of letter sounds to create their own sentences.
I am lucky enough to have a classroom full of 24 wonderful and special students.
Our school is a large, there are 5 kindergarten classrooms and we all have 24 kids! Our school is a Title One campus, most of our students are on free or reduced lunch. A large percent of the campus are English Language Learners, in fact over 50% of my classroom is.
More specifically, my students are very creative and kind. I have been amazed watching them make friends with one and other. I see not only the learning of state standards every day, but I am also witnessing my students learning to be caring and helpful to their classmates.
I feel honored to be one of their first teachers.
My Project
These write and wipe boards would be used in so many different ways. First, everyday as I am teaching the letter formations I am thinking to myself, "I wish we could use a white board!" I am using paper and worksheets instead and not only is it wasteful I believe that it becomes too monotonous to the children. I think that a class set of write and wipe would be a wonderful tool for adding a little excitement to the "paper pencil" learning.
I would also like to use them for quick checks. Students would be able to answer a question or follow a direction and then hold the board up to show understanding. This would allow me to assess for understanding quickly and efficiently. I would be able identify students needing extra support instantly rather than after checking papers or giving a more formal assessment.
I know that these boards would add so much to our learning environment.
They would be used daily across all subjects areas. Plus, because they are reusable they would continue to help educate countless future students that will come through my classroom.
