My students are wonderful kindergarteners who get so excited when they come to the science lab. They are naturally curious and are such little adventurers! I want to give them hands-on experiences that they can build on in successive years.
Many of them come to school not having had any practice speaking English at home or learning their ABC's.
As well, most of them come from low-income families and are on the free lunch program. They are a delight to teach and usually have so many questions about many different science and engineering topics.
As part of their studies on weather, Kindergarten students are asked to design a doghouse that will protect the fictional dog Lucky from the more extreme types of weather. How great if my students could use cardboard and the Makedo toolkit items to build the entire house! After using the screwdriver and saw, made for little fingers, students finish their design by applying the science they ave learned regarding weather concepts. Students test different roofing materials and choose the best one as a weatherproof roof and add it to their homemade doghouse! Students will learn so much about the Engineering Design Process through this project.
