Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

“Celi is crawling into the aquarium!” "Teacher, Monica is eating an earthworm." "Teacher, Teacher, two tadpoles are kissing each other." "Then when the snow fell, and the ice age started..." How happy I am for the privilege of working with five-year-old children! I laugh and cry all day long. All of my 40 students speak English as a Second Language. Ten do not speak English. All of them receive free or reduced price lunches. They are so socio-economically disadvantaged that they have very few enriching experiences to develop prior knowledge so they can make connections. Although we are only 50 miles from the ocean and the mountains, most have never seen the beach or the snow. We integrate science and writing with our last reading unit about the ocean. Everything is coming together for the children; they are beginning to read decodable books and write simple sentences. They are crazy about the books and videos about sea animals that we have in the classroom. A video of the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) is very popular. Sometimes students can see short internet video clips of specific animals at the MBA. At the MBA, it is possible to stand beside, over, and beneath aquariums and watch the animals in action and even touch several of them. The MBA allows my 40 kindergartners and one parent each to visit the aquarium for free. Lunches are provided by the school. All we need is funds for the bus to get us there! Each student with his/her mother or father will find specific animals at the Aquarium and answer questions about habitat, appearance, etc. Back in the classroom, we will write and illustrate a book about our experiences on the bus, at the ocean, and about specific fish in the Aquarium. I will reproduce the book, so each child will have a memento of his/her first field trip. This trip will have several benefits for my students: 1. Enrichment and extension: Students can actually see, hear, and touch the animals they have studied. 2. Family: Mothers and fathers can share this bonding event with their children, an experience denied them because of economic difficulties. 3. Connections: The field trip will help students build background knowledge necessary to make connections with learning experiences. I love my children very much, so I want to share this experience with them, to make sure they get to see the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
