As adults, we learn the best and work the hardest when we are doing something we enjoy. The same is true of kindergartners. As they learn to read, they will work harder and learn more if I can make it as enjoyable as possible for them.
I have twenty one kindergarten students in a suburban school in South Carolina.
They are so excited about everything we're learning together and eager to learn more! At five and six years old, they're constantly busy, which is one reason it is so important to keep them engaged in their own learning so that they can focus all that energy into their education and learning to read. Their interests vary from animals to popular TV shows, sports, sewing. Their reading levels are just as diverse, from those just getting started to those reading several grade levels higher.
My Project
Because of the diversity of my students, they need to have a vast selection of leveled texts to chose from for Independent Reading. We need books that range in both topic and complexity in order to keep every student engaged in their reading. One of the skills that we teach our students is how to select "Just Right" books, ones that are on an appropriate reading level and that also interest them. That being said, we must have "Just Right" books in order to teach them how to use them! We want for these children to love reading; but, at this age, there are so many things that stand in their way, few books are written on their reading level and many of those that are on their level are uninteresting. Help me break down those barriers for our children. Help me expose them to all kinds of literature and remove the frustration that comes when they can't find a book they can read on their own!
Donations to our project will help me provide an wider selection of leveled texts for my sweet students.
My students will have better access to books written on their level, and about things that are interesting to them. I want to give my students every possible opportunity to succeed and this is a great way to help me provide another invaluable resource to help in meeting our goals!
