Our school is a K-7th grade dual-language immersion charter school in the DeKalb County School District of Metro Atlanta, Georgia. We are a multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multi-lingual community. Our Kindergarten students learn math and science fully immersed in either Spanish, Mandarin or French, while learning language arts and social studies in English.
Our students are special because not only are they immersed into a new language, but they are challenged to excel and be top performers in English language arts and math as well.
We utilize a variety of teaching methods to make sure these students are getting everything they need at school. The parents are also integral parts of the learning process and support the work at home that their children are doing in the classroom. The student bring home books and other class materials home to show and share with their parents. It's a team effort!
My Project
Children love to read fiction storybooks. It's often harder to engage readers in nonfiction books, which is critical to becoming a balanced reader. These books were carefully chosen not only for teachers to read aloud to illustrate features of nonfiction books, but to allow for independent reading for advanced Kindergarten readers. The block play figures will be used during center time to help them use the language they've learned by hearing and reading about community helpers. They will also be used in their Spanish immersion program to learn the vocabulary surrounding the jobs and clothing of community helpers.
Providing a variety of texts and text levels will encompass all levels of reading and research.
When the students are proficient in the jobs and language used to describe these helpers, it is easier for them to learn the language in their Spanish immersion portion of their day.
