This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from a low income community. Many of them have experienced more trauma in the first five years of their life than most adults will in a lifetime.
Most of them come to school with very few social skills and very little coping skills.
They have difficulty controlling their emotions and don't have the ability to solve conflicts with other children.
Even though they have faced many hardships, they are so excited to come to school each and every day.
My Project
Many of my students have experienced a lot of trauma prior to entering kindergarten. This year I want to use the techniques and practices from the Conscious Discipline Program ( by Dr. Becky Bailey).
I will be using books and materials from the Conscious Discipline Program in my classroom to help my students better understand and regulate their emotions on a daily basis.
I will be creating a "Safe Spot" in my classroom where students can go to identify their emotions and work through conflicts. I will be using the emotion dolls and "eggs" to help students understand master these skills. I will also be implementing "Kindness" strategies (kindness trees, recording daily acts of kindness, a year long kindness train) with my class throughout the year.
