Hi, I am a Kindergarten teacher at Cameron Park Elementary School in Hillsborough, NC. My students have been studying the seven continents this year! Each child has created their own passport, which we have decorated, written in, and pasted memorable photos of the instruments, paintings, and foods we have created together. The children have brought artifacts from home, and parents have come into the classroom to contribute their own cultures and backgrounds! I have done much of my research on-line; however, I do not have adequate resources in the classroom to support the unit. Each continent study contains an amazing wealth of foods, landforms, lakes, oceans, music, art, languages, homes, people, etc. Many of these things can be explained in detail; however to see photographs of these things (since a class field trip would be quite costly :) ) is the next best thing since they do not have prior experiences to rely on. Due to the restricted and already overstretched budget in our county, ordering new books, seven Continent study kits, and globes has not been an option. I want to continue to foster my students love for all cultures and ethnicities. I will continue to use the resources I have to the best of my ability, however I do appreciate your consideration to make this unit EXTRAORDINARY for my kindergarten class by adding addition materials! You will be a part in creating students who love to learn and appreciate all races, cultures, and ethnicities. The more our children understand one another, the more likely they are to develop kindness, tolerance, and an appreciation for others!
