This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In a time in history where we have been connected by the worldwide web; we see children being more and more disconnected to how to genuinely interact with one another. SEL or social emotional learning is a relatively new phrase, that addresses the need for a new type of teaching, to address the ever increasing needs we see in our students' emotional lives.

My take on SEL is a little different from what you might find under a google search for social emotional teaching supplies.

I believe the way for children to develop true social emotional learning is through genuine interactions with one another. I agree with the idea that children need to build an emotional vocabulary. I think the books that I have chosen to include in this project can help my students begin to develop an emotional vocabulary.

Where I take a slightly different path, is that I believe at the heart of kindergarten is SEL. I think the natural order of kindergarten should innately provide social emotional learning opportunities for the children. With this in mind, I am creating an outdoor curriculum that is creating literacy connections to Wisconsin animals, and the seasons we experience here. This is where the stuffed animals come into play. We will recreate their homes in our gardens throughout the seasons. We will care for our animals, go on adventures with them, and learn all sorts of lessons. We will learn how to share, how to work together, how to be responsible for our supplies, and how to extend our classroom community into the outdoors. This includes being courteous to each other, our neighbors and to the animals who live in our garden. The children express a wide range of emotions while we are in the garden, each providing a teachable moment!
