Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Yeah!", "Yes!", and "Woo hoo!", are only a few of the words that I hear when it is computer lab time. My students love EVERYTHING that has to do with technology. Whether I am showing them something on the computer or I am assessing them on a tablet, my students become engrossed in that activity.

My students approach life with the enthusiasm and curiosity that all five-year-olds seem to have in abundance.

Despite living in a low socioeconomic area where their parents struggle to make ends meet, they are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. Their parents want the best education possible for them but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have up to date technology at home. It is up to me and the school to provide these wonderful, amazing, eager and bright kids with experiences using technology. We are a Title I school, which means that we do get funds to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantaged, but not enough to provide every student with a computer, lap top or tablet. Because we are such a big school, we only get a chance to go to the computer lab twice a month for fifty minutes. These kids WILL be our future leaders. They deserve more exposure and experience with the technology that will shape tomorrow.

My Project

Having a tablet in my classroom means that my students will be able to access the curriculum that we are learning in a more interactive way. And, because tablets are great visuals, they can be affective with a wide variety of students. The tablet is a great tool for my English language learners, for my special needs students, for my below grade level students, for my above level students and for anyone in between. The tablet will allow my students to further explore any topic that they are curious about in an instant. We no longer. have to wait two weeks for our turn in the computer lab. I can easily download many educational applications where students can read or listen to stories, where they can practice tracing the ABC's, where they can learn about letter sounds, where they can learn vocabulary, math, science and so on. What can be done on a tablet is endless. The possibilities are endless and wonderful.

My students need to be prepared to go to college with far more technology than what is currently available to them.

I feel that having access to a tablet not only exposes them to technology but also to the words around them. It will allow them to be amazed at what they see and learn. It will feed their curiosity. It will help shape the leaders of tomorrow.
