Kindergarten Style Library

My students need a cozy couch for partner reading with friends in the library as well as a bookshelf that will display books by their cover, helping small readers find what they are looking for.

My kindergarten class lives in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.

They are 40% English Language Learners and come from diverse backgrounds: Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Somali, Thai, Mexican, African-American and Caucasian. Many of them come to school academically behind national norms, just beginning to identify letters and sounds or write their name. Amazingly though, kindergartners have the ability to catch-up and catch-up quickly with the right resources, time to practice, and instruction.

The diversity and the way these 5 year olds notice and yet don't notice it, is vibrant, entertaining and endearing. All of my students have things in common though. They love to learn. They love to sing. They love to explore and create. As Robert Fulghum stated in the quote above, "everything is still possible".

My Project

My goal is for the kindergarten library to be my students' favorite place in the classroom. Bright, cozy, easy to use and filled with amazing children's literature. Luckily, we have been able to fill our library with books. Now I'd like to add some better seating and book display furniture to help the kids use those books. The bookshelf I'm asking for displays books by their covers. This is so important for K readers because they can't read titles on the binding of books. They rely on pictures to help them know what a books will be about. This bookshelf will show them many book covers at once, allowing them to go "shopping" for high interest books. The couch allows two small readers to sit together and share a book, but ensures they have enough personal space to avoid conflict. This will help my students partner read. Partnering reading allows students to help each other as they begin to decipher plot from pictures, sight words and the beginnings of "sounding out" new words.

These resources will make our library an effective tool in developing my students' skills and affinity toward reading.
