Kindergarten Students Need To Learn and Socialize!
My students need The Mystery Box, Pop & Match, Rhyming Sounds Game, and other literacy centers to help them build skills and socialize with their classmates.
As a teacher in a low-income school district, I see that my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. We spend a big part of the day together, and one of my goals has been to always provide them with authentic, meaningful experiences on a daily basis.
My students are inquisitive, curious and very eager to learn.
They love to learn about new things and especially love hands-on activities. Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Unfortunately, some of these things may prevent them from acquiring the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk into my classroom my job is to not only teach them but to make their day a memorable one. I want them to leave my class on a daily basis thinking, "Learning is Fun."
My Project
Have you seen the common core standards for Kindergarten? Things have changed drastically for our students in the last couple of years. The work is much more intense and what is expected of them to do is not always realistic. Unfortunately, my students do not have time to "play" anymore due to the high demands of our intense curriculum. All children should have time to socialize especially, Kindergarten children!
One way for this to happen is for my students to be able to socialize while learning!
Having these literacy centers in my classroom would be a great opportunity for my students to get to practice the skills and strategies taught while having the opportunity to do this with a "friend". For example, the children can practice the skills that they have been taught, through "playing". They can build words, rhyme words, identify beginning, middle and ending sounds through hands on experiences. The children will feel like they are playing when they are actually learning. Hands on activities are very important and will help the children in many ways. It truly would be a great way for my students to learn while playing....These literacy centers would be a great asset to my classroom and they would be used on a daily basis.
