Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten in a public school in the country. We have a beautiful location surrounded by apple tree orchards and raspberry fields. I have 23 students in my kinder class. They come from a variety of backgrounds and homes. They have all developed a love for reading and writing using The Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop models. They are very eager to learn new things and have made awesome progress this year!
They are becoming avid readers and are reading everywhere!
Each day, I give a mini lesson and then each child is able to work at their own reading level using leveled books. I also give guided reading lessons to small groups where all of the children in the group are reading a new book at their level. When they finish reading the book, they get to put it in their reading box to read again. This gives them lots of practice and helps with fluency. As you can imagine, you need a lot of books to be able to reach all the levels in my classroom. The kids beg for more reading time each day!
My Project
In my diverse kindergarten classroom, I use Reader's Workshop. I introduce a new book to each group of 6 students each day. After working on this book together, they are able to put it in their book box where they can practice it again and again.
My kids love to read and are excited to read a new book.
They have become avid readers. They want to read all the time. Each week the students are able to go to the leveled library and choose 2-3 new books at their reading level. More leveled books would really help me be able to provide more books at multiple levels for all of my students.
Students get better at reading through instruction and practice. A balanced leveled library and guided reading books help make all this possible. This is my second year teaching reader's workshop and I am trying to build up the leveled materials for my classroom and students so I can help them succeed. By donating to this project, you will be helping many children to achieve academic success.
