This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach kindergarten at a small school in a very large county. Each year there I have had a diverse group of students in ability, personality, and demographics.
They are always such a fun group of bright-eyed kindergarteners that love learning!
I can tell at their young age that they really want to succeed and aim to please. Even though I am their teacher, I learn from them every day in their interactions with others, their unending curiosity, and their perseverance.
My Project
I have become the virtual teacher for my Kindergarten team for at least the first semester of this school year. During our first week of class virtually we talked about colors matching feelings. When we shared how we were feeling, one boy said he felt sad. When I asked why, he said “Sad because we don’t get to paint.” It made me sad thinking about the parts of Kindergarten they would miss out on from home. I don’t want crafting and painting to be one of them. As a teacher, one thing I miss is having student art and work out in the halls on the walls. I decided I could help brighten all of our time together by sending all my students paint for use at home. We are also going to do a craft together by making a self portrait that students will send to me at school for display. The book I choose will be the perfect multicultural read aloud to go along with our self portrait project. I am so excited to be able to make these things happen through Donors Choose!
