Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are my joy. They are eager-to-learn 4-5 year olds who amaze me daily with their learning, despite the challenges they face. They are an extremely diverse group of learners; 87.4% of students at my school receive free or reduced lunch and 67.1% of students are English Language Learners. Burmese, Nepali, Spanish, and English are just a few of the languages my students in Aurora, Colorado come in knowing. Their diversity is amazing and it provides ample unique learning opportunities in our classroom.

The vision statement at my school is: "Embrace Genius, Empower Leaders."

We believe that every person has genius; my students and I work hard every day to discover the strengths in each other while empowering each other to lead.

My Project

My students need ample opportunities for movement throughout the day; movement is so crucial to their ability to focus and learn. Research by Jensen (2000) found that students who move in the classroom have higher levels of noradrenaline and dopamine in their brains. These are energizers to the brain, increasing energy levels and improving information storage/retrieval. Right now, my students sit in chairs many times throughout the day. I'm looking to improve their learning at their seats by providing them with more opportunities for movement.

I am requesting wobble chairs, wedge cushions, wobble cushions, and fidget bands.

By providing a variety of seating options, students will be able to engage in different kinds of movement as they visit the many tables throughout the day. Cushions will also be used to provide additional movement while students learn on the carpet, based on specific student needs.

I am excited to incorporate the additional movement that my students currently crave. Their learning will surely increase as they have the chance to move and become energized.
