Great scientists all started small! Kindergarten is a great place to begin building great scientists! My kindergarten students need an infusion of science related books to enhance our science units.
My students are hardworking, smart, and inquisitive.
Most live in poverty and have little background knowledge in science. They are eager for opportunities to do science, to discover new things, and make new connections. They enjoy science so much they often stop me in the halls asking when will it be their turn to come to science class again. Each time they get exposed to the wonders of science through books and experiments, they discover a little more about the world around them, new things that interest them, and new pathways they would like to explore.
My Project
I only recently had kindergarten added to my science schedule and I am still lacking in literature and non fiction books to interest them in our units. These books help the students to visualize the things we are learning about. The books build background knowledge to the subject matter and gives them material to draw on as they delve into new science inquiry. I have been using books from our school library but our library is very old and many of the books are out of date. We also do not have books available for all the subjects I am teaching. New books would go a long way to making science more meaningful to my students.
These books will set the stage for future learning.
A book about a friendly spider could set one little girl on the path to becoming an entomologist. A book about rocks could set one little boy on the path to becoming a geologist. These books will help open up the world of science to my youngest students. They provide a wonderful jumping off place as we delve into each unit, exploring with literature, non fiction, and inquiry activities.
