Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title 1 school, meaning that we have a high percentage of low income students who receive free breakfast and lunch.
Generally, the Kindergarten classes in my district and school have around 1/4 of the students who are ESL, English as a second language.
These students are non-native to our area and have relocated from areas where Spanish is the primary language spoken.
I want to provide experiences for my students that they may not otherwise get. Kindergarten students are now expected to know material that was formally taught in 1st grade.
My Project
Listening and reading skills are crucial in the Kindergarten standards.
Having a quiet and welcoming area designated to the listening center will allow my ELL students a chance to have a positive interaction with the English Language.
This area would meet 2 needs of my students. One, by listening to stories in a designated area, my students would continue to learn about characters, setting, and main idea through another avenue. The second need being met is that many of my students have never had exposure to paperback books. Therefore, having a comfortable, child size area for my listening center will help them interact with a book properly by leaning how to hold the book correctly and follow along by using their finger.
